It is varnish which also serves as a colored background varnish for gilding marble, in particular for gilding engravings. The chosen color changes the final shade of the sheet, once applied. A warmer tone of Mordant will also make the shade of the leaf warmer. With a colder tone, we will get the opposite effect.
